Taste
- Gustation, or taste, is the sensory impression of food or other substances on the tongue and is one of the five traditional senses.
- Taste buds contain the receptors for taste. They are located around small structures (papillae) on the upper surface of the tongue, soft palate, upper esophagus, the cheek, and epiglottis.
- Lingual papillae are the small, nipple or hair-like structures on the upper surface of the tongue that give the tongue its characteristic rough texture.
