Psychological and Biological Treatments
Psychotherapy
- Psychotherapy is the use of psychological methods, particularly when based on regular personal interaction, to help a person change and overcome problems in desired ways.
- Insight-oriented psychotherapy relies on conversation between the therapist and the client. It helps people through understanding and expressing feelings, motivations, beliefs, fears and desires.
- In free association, psychoanalytic patients are invited to relate whatever comes into their minds during the analytic session, and not to censor their thoughts.
- In psychodynamic psychotherapy, working through is seen as the process of repeating, elaborating, and amplifying interpretations. It is believed that such a process is critical to the success of therapy.
- Interpersonal psychotherapy is a time-limited treatment that encourages the patient to regain control of mood and functioning. It is based on the principle that there is a relationship between the way people communicate and interact with others and their mental health.
