The other writer
In reading comprehension exercises, your goal is to understand the intentions of the author of the passage. You strive to hear the author's voice in the writing to interpret the subtle nuances and bring out the subtext. But that's not all there is to doing well in reading comprehension exams. There is also a second writer, the writer of the questions. They also have intentions and a voice. To see the substructure of method and intention beneath the multiple choice question is a big part of what people call being good a multiple choice tests.
