Structural formula of phosphatidyl choline (Blue/Green: Fatty acid, Black: Glycerol backbone, Red: phosphate, Purple: Choline)
Structural formula of phosphatidyl choline.

In the biosynthesis of phosphoglycerides, an important component of cell membranes, two of the hydroxyl groups of glycerol are esterified to a fatty acid while the third is esterified to a phosphoric acid moeity. The phosphoric acid moeity has been further modified by esterifying to an additional alcohol, usually choline.
