Interdisciplinary Note (11 of 25)
The carbohydrate units of glycoproteins previously added in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum are modified and elaborated in the Golgi. Glycosylation occurring in the Golgi is called terminal glycosylation as opposed to core glycosylation which occurs in the ER. Vesicles budding from the golgi may be targeted for secretion from the plasma membrane or targeted to the lumen of lysosomes.
